Tax Credits Scheme

What's behind this? I have worked in construction for over 20 years, previously for large and medium sized housebuilders and for the last 6 years as the owner and founder of Hursley Developments, a small construction / development company. We recently made a successful research and development tax credits claim with the help of a specialist advisor. We were totally unaware this scheme was available to companies in the construction industry, as it would appear are many others . With the right guidance, achieving a successful claim is straight forward and we are now looking to assist others in our network to do the same.

Background

Well established government scheme designed to boost innovation. First introduced in 2000, currently funded until 2027 and expected to be extended to 2032.

The scheme's terminology creates the impression that it's geared toward advancing science and technology and is therefore exclusive to a limited number of businesses, but this isn't the case. The definitions of "innovation" and "research" are much broader than is represented, which is key as to why the scheme is available to a much wider variety of businesses.

Due to its inherent problem-solving environment, the construction industry in particular is perfect for legitimately benefiting from the scheme.

Plus, companies can apply annually and make claims for up to two years in arrears as long as the scheme remains active and each application meets the eligibility requirements.

Application and fees

HMRC are actively encouraging SME businesses to take advantage of the scheme. To achieve a successful claim, it's critical to ensure that the application is presented and completed correctly. That's where specialist R&D claims providers come in.

  • We chose to engage with one of the major R&D claims specialists for our 2020 application who submit around £15 million in claims per month.  They specialise in assisting companies new to the scheme that probably don’t realise they are eligible.  They were fantastic, doing almost everything on our behalf. They are approved by the HMRC and have a impressive success rate.

  • However we also have partnerships in place with a number of alternative experienced R&D advisors, located around the country, one in particular only deals with construction industry claims.  For legal compliance reasons, companies are not allowed to claim a 100% success rate however all our partners only submit claims they are confident are eligible and they all have very impressive success rates.  Depending on your location, what your company does and how it is set up we can direct you to the most appropriate advisor.

  • There are no upfront fees for any of the advisors we work with. Only once you have received your tax credits from HMRC will you pay a fee to the claims company and this will be as an agreed percentage of the successful claim.  If you are introduced through us this percentage fee can often be negotiated. At this stage, we would also receive a small fee, but this would be paid by the claims company, not you.

  • To start, you simply need to contact us and we will put you in touch with one of our partner advisors.  You will then chat through the process with an R&D claims expert, who will quickly determine whether or not your company is likely to be eligible to make a claim.

  • If it appears that you are eligible you will need to provide some additional account and project information, but they will advise and assist you with the specific details required.  The application will then be completed on your behalf.  Before submitting the application, you will have final approval to ensure that everything is accurate.  HMRC typically processes claims in 6-8 weeks depending on their staff levels at the time.
